Night Shift

I’m currently working the night shift at Severstal Steel. The shutdown of ‘C’ Blast furnace has begun. We will be working seven days a week for months. Being a union electrician is a funny job. At the beginning of the year I was unemployed and broke. Now I’m a foreman on one of the biggest jobs in town making a ton of dough.

Like my father always used to say, “You have to make hay when the sun shines.” Working everyday gets pretty old, but I know the next layoff is always around the corner. Being in the IBEW is the best part time job you will ever have.

I did get a good draw out of the hall and have a pretty good crew. We have been hitting the long ball the last few nights, and tonite it is finally a little calmer.

Are You Getting an IPhone?

I just finished reading about the new Iphone. It sounds like Steve Jobs did it again. According to those who already have the phone, it makes all other devices obsolete.

I wasn’t buying into the hype until I read a little more about the newest Apple creation. It does everything and then some without buttons. It is a touch screen and comes equipped with a real browser for surfing the web.

If the OT keeps up at the Rouge I just may have to pick one up. Great work Mr. Jobs

Welcome to Hall Slug

This blog will be about the ramblings of a union electrician. I’m 42 years old and have been a member of the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers), for over twenty years.

For those who are not familiar with union electricians, the IBEW and UAW are two totally different games. Unlike the UAW, IBEW Electricians, can be laid off without cause at any time. That means we have to hit the long ball.

I’m presently working at the Rouge Complex in Dearborn, MI. Severstal Steel is currently in the middle of a large renovation of the facility.

More on that next time.
