Here we are only a couple weeks away from Memorial Day weekend and the spring season is in full gear. In the recent weeks the weather has been decent and we’ve had an occasional rainy day, which has definitely helped green things up. The trees are finally starting to show a bit of green as the leaf buds are sprouting. The rainfall has also helped keep the waterfalls flowing at a good rate and make for some great pictures. Soon the surrounding forests will be filled with trilliums and other wildflowers – a really beautiful sight.

Spray Falls flowing into Lake Superior

This Saturday (May 14th) Pictured Rocks Cruises will be open for the season with a 2pm daily cruise that includes a trip to Spray Falls. The Cruise is one of many must-do attractions in the area and one of the best ways to truly experience the Pictured Rocks National Shoreline. Make sure to visit the Cruises’ website for a complete schedule of departure times.

You should definitely make plans to visit the Munising area for the upcoming holiday weekend. There’s a lot to see and do as well as great places to eat and sleep. Spring is definitely in the air and it doesn’t feel too shabby. For about the past week we’ve been experiencing some great weather. It looks like it’s here to stay. The waterfalls are starting to flow and the spring flowers will be blooming. Come on up and explore Munising!

It’s the last weekend of March and the early spring weather we experienced a few weeks ago has left us. For the weekend, the weatherman is calling for temperatures to reach the mid-20s and drop in to the low teens at night. This is quite the contrast to the balmy weather we had a bit ago. They’re also forecasting snow for the next several days but nothing major, an inch here and there. If you’re wondering about the big storm that swept through the Midwest earlier in the week, that one missed us and stayed south. I think Lake Superior played a part in that and that’s why they say the weather guys have a hard job around here. Lake Superior plays a major role in our weather patterns and she’s pretty unpredictable. With this cooler weather, the snow should be holding up at Valley Spur X/C ski trails if you’re looking to get out skiing a few more times. Also, any diehard snowmobiler should find snow in the Kingston Plains area as well as in the woods. The winter season has definitely not left us, yet.

3/10/11 – Fishing was a bit slow. A lack of snow is still causing a slippery commute for those heading out, so cleats would be a good idea. Anglers are now turning their attention to fishing shallow waters for coho, splake and smelt. Whitefish action was slow. For coho, try jigging rapalas or Swedish pimples. Average size was 15 inches. Some were fishing on flow ice in Trout Bay however extreme caution needs to be used. Schools of smelt are being marked on a regular basis but catch rates were slow. Try hali-jigs with natural bait. Those spearing lake herring have taken a few fish in the early morning. Splake action was slow. Anglers reported mixed results for perch over the weed beds in 30 feet of water.

3/3/11 – A lack of recent snowfall continues to make traversing the ice difficult and very slippery. Anglers are advised to wear cleats when fishing in these conditions. The primary focus in the bay remains on whitefish. The catch rates continued to be fair to poor. Single eggs and wax worms have been the bait of choice, with most anglers fishing depths from 50 to 80 feet of water, bouncing baits just off the bottom. Anglers have also begun to catch Menominee using these tactics in shallower water with the primary bait being wax worms. Some of these fish have approached 14 inches. Trout Bay reportedly formed fishable ice for several days over the past week and anglers who made it out reported fair to excellent success rates for Coho. Average size has been around 15 inches. Schools of smelt have also begun to be marked or seen with more regularity. Anglers are having fair success spearing lake herring with some nicer fish being reported recently. Efforts are focused in the early morning hours.
