Greetings from Uniontown, Pennsylvania

Started a new job in Masontown, Pennsylvania today.

A little background information for those of you not associated with the IBEW,  (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).

I was able to secure this job because I am a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

During these times of economic upheaval and uncertainty, I’m very grateful to be a member of the IBEW.

We are the people that help keep the power flowing to this great country of ours.

I picked up a call in Masontown, PA,  IBEW Local 5 Belle Vernon’s Jurisdiction of the Pittsburgh area.

IBEW Local 5 provides Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas with the most highly trained and qualified electricians in the U.S.

I’m working at the Hatfield Powerhouse in Masontown, PA.

We are currently working for Chapman Electric on the wastewater clarification process of the scrubber project.

Casteel Electric has the the bulk of the scrubber project and have been working 5-10′s.  They are still erecting steel and duct work on their side of the job.  That would be the call to pick up in my opinion.

Hello From Maysville, Kentucky

I’ve been working down in Maysville, Kentucky at the Spurlock Powerhouse in the Ohio River Valley.

While the work picture has been getting worse in IBEW Local 58, things are still humming along the Ohio River in Maysville.

There are three powerhouses within a ten mile radius of Maysville, KY and Aberdeen, OH. Killen Station is planning a second unit in the near future. Stuart Station has been employing IBEW members, and Spurlock Station is trying to bring Unit 4 online by spring of 2009. A unit 5 addition is also planned for the future at Spurlock Station.

We are currently working 5-10′s on the Unit 4 addition at Spurlock Station in Maysville. We’re working for Cherne Electric and are being treated well. The job consists of mostly tramps with a high turnover due to many brothers dragging weekly for more OT. Today there was a call for nine men and only one showed up to work.

The local 575 Portsmouth hands seem to be letting the job go, mostly due to the drive.

While things are slowing down in Portsmouth, there is still a demand for wireman in Maysville.

In addition to power house work along the river, they also just broke ground for a new steel mill next to the recent coke oven job south of Franklin Furnace, OH. The steel mill should start hiring IBEW members in the spring of 2009.

Work will slow this winter, but things look good down here for the next few years.

Marathon Refinery Upgrade Approved

Marathon Begins Heavy Oil Refinery Upgrade Project

Michigan’s only gasoline refinery, Marathon Oil in southwest Detroit, received final permission Friday to begin a $1.9-billion expansion of its plant, which will create 800 construction jobs and more than 100 permanent jobs and, possibly, give some gas price relief in 2011 to drivers in southeast Michigan.

Marathon officials moved quickly after getting the news, beginning construction within minutes of learning it had received the permit to start.

“We’re thrilled,” said company spokeswoman Chris Fox.

The company had pile drivers in the ground at the site minutes after the Department of Environmental Quality announced it had approved its air pollution permit.

“We’ve had people on standby, waiting for weeks,” Fox said.
